Chemical Oxygen Demand (COD) determines the amount of oxygen required to

oxidize organic matter in a sample of water, under specific oxidizing agent conditions,
temperature and time. For the determination of organic matter by the Permanganate,
the oxidant is brought into contact with the water to be analyzed (Mindo river water)
and a time is given to boiling, thus producing oxidation of the organic matter. "The
amount of permanganate consumed is proportional to the organic matter present in the
sample." (RODIER, J.1981) For the present practice, 1 g of KMnO4 was weighed to
dissolve in distilled water and titrate to 500 mL boiled for 30 minutes, 10 mL of the 0.01
N sodium oxalate solution and titrated with potassium permanganate was added
thereto was added 100 ml of problem water; Followed by 5 ml of sulfuric acid and glass
beads. Giving an incandescent red color was heated potassium permanganate was
added 10 ml of oxalic acid resulting in discoloration. The excess of hot oxalic acid is
evaluated with permanganate to give a pink coloration. The results in 100 ml of Vol.
Sample was used Vol. KMnO4 shows 4.13 ml with a Vol. KMnO4 White (ml) of 0.5 with
2.88 ppm of dissolved matter in the sample In conclusion The method used is based on
the reaction of a sample of water contaminated with an energetic oxidant, such as
potassium dichromate1, in acid medium Sulfuric acid with Ag + as catalyst and the
colorimetric titration of the amount of dichromate consumed in this process. The
oxidizable organic compounds act by reducing the dichromate, Cr (VI), to chromic ion
Cr (III). The amount of dichromate consumed provides a measure of the concentration
of contaminants in the water.
