Cellular interference with electronic

circuitry

In this presentation we’re going to talk about radio

frequency interference with some electronic
devices
This interference is called RFI.
What is a radio frequency
interference?
● In radio frequency spectrum, this is an interference from
RF transmitters that affects electronic device’s proper
operation.
● Cellular networks that use TDMA (Time Division Multiple
Access) also induce RFI noises in some electronic
devices (e.g audio amplifiers, radio receivers, cassette
players)
● Other electronic equipments that interfere with AM and
FM radio receivers
How cellular networks cause
interference in electric devices?
● Some cellular networks use TDMA (an cellular technology
that allow several users to share the same channel by
dividing them into different time slots). TDMA cellphone turn
on/off RF transmitter every time slot period, which cause
pulsed RF signals. The signals are amplified and coupled by
an audio amplifier, which makes buzzing noises.
● For example if the cellphone transmits at 0.577ms time slot,
the repetition rate will be 1.733khz (or 1733hz).This will result
in 1733hz noise.
● Bring a cellphone near some audio equipments with poor RF
shielding and you will hear some irritating noises.
To avoid it
● Turn off your cellphone or enable flight mode
● If you don’t need to turn it off , use aluminium
foil or anti-static bag.
