The City’s waterfront location made it
extremely vulnerable to flooding. After
two seasons of severe flooding, an
ambitious project to raise the entire
downtown was proposed.
This bridge is among the most
beautiful and unique vertical lift

which likely accounts for why a great
deal of effort was put toward building
an aesthetically pleasing bridge.
At one time the absolute ruler of what

clean of gold.
During World War II, the Delta
Queen functioned as a Navy
emergency hospital transport. After
the war, the delegates at the
founding meeting of the United
Nations in San Francisco enjoyed
sightseeing tours of the San
Francisco Bay aboard the Delta
Queen.

Pearl Harbor brought a turn in the
fate of the boats. The Delta Queen
and the Delta King rushed back
into Navy service as emergency
hospital transports

as emergency medical ships for the
people facing the attack.
