4QPss, Masoretic: for. 4QPsa reads ʩʫ ???ʠ, with ???ʠ being a word with three letters unable to be deciphered. Based on the use of ʤʥʤʩ in the previous verse as O
Yahweh, I suggest that possibly 4QPs read ʩʰʣʠ, and the verse begins: O Soverign Master, because there is nothing reliable in his mouth…

5/6ىevPs: my bones (plene spelling). 4QPsf and Masoretic have the defective spelling ʩʺʮʶʲ.
9
5/6ىevPs, Masoretic: is cleaving. 4QPsf reads ʹʡʣʮ which is usually a preposition-noun meaning more than honey, but context dictates that this is a verb; possible
meanings: melts, sticks, dissolves.
10
5/6ىevPs, Masoretic: You have set me. 4QPsf reads ʨʴʥʹ meaning I have been judged deserving.
11
5/6ىevPs: they have surrounded me (plene spelling). 4QPsf and Masoretic have the defective spelling ʩʰʴʩʷʤ.
12
5/6ىevPs: they have pierced. 4QPsf reads the alternative spelling ʥʸʫ meaning the same thing. Masoretic reads the corrupt and incomprehensible ʩʸʠʫ meaning like a
lion.
13
5/6ىevPs: my hands (with emphatic paragogic ʤ suffix). 4QPsf and Masoretic read the non-emphatic ʩʣʩ.

4QPsh: The arrogant (alternative spelling). 11QPsa and Masoretic have the usual spelling of the word ʭʩʣʦ. The reading of 4QPsh could also be a plene spelling rather
than an alternative form, as the Masoretic vowel points give the pronunciation zediym to ʭʩʣʦ, whereas ʭʩʣʩʦ of 4QPSh would give us the pronunciation ziydiym. 4QPsh
could also have been influenced by the verb underlying the noun - ʣʩʦ - meaning to boil, to seethe with a derived meaning of to be arrogant, to be presumptuous.

11QPsa: Jerusalem (plene spelling). 4Q522 and Masoretic have the defective spelling ʭʬʹʥʸʩ.
126
4Q522, Mas, LXX: the tribes of Yah. 11QPsa possibly omits this. It is unable to determine accurately, as the manuscript is fragmentary here.
127
4Q522, Mas, LXX: a testimony. 11QPsa reads ʺʣʲ, which is either the defective spelling of ʺʥʣʲ, or is another word which means congregation.
128
4Q522, Mas, LXX: for Israel. 11QPsa reads ʬʠʸʹʩ meaning Israel.
129
4Q522, Mas, LXX: thrones. 11QPsa reads ʠʱʫ, which is the singular form and means throne.
130
11QPsa, LXX: and security. 4Q522 reads ʭʥʬʹ meaning peace, and Masoretic reads ʤʥʬʹ meaning security.
131
11QPsa: good (feminine). Masoretic reads the masculine spelling ʡʥʨ, and 4Q522 reads ʭʥʬʹ meaning peace. LXX doesn’t contain either word.

11QPsa, Mas, LXX: surrounds His people. 4QPse has the words swapped around, giving the meaning His people surrounds, making it an unconventional subject-object-
verb sentence syntax. Hebrew usually has verb-subject-object.

4QPse, Mas, LXX: Those who turn aside to. 11QPsa omits this word.
134
11QPsa, LXX: twisted ways. 4QPse and Masoretic read ʭʺʥʬ(ʥ)ʷʬʷʲ meaning their twisted ways.
135
4QPse, Mas, LXX: with workers. 11QPsa reads ʩʬʲʥʴʬʥʫʺʠ meaning with all workers.

11QPsa, LXX: like ones consoled. 4QPse and Masoretic read ʭʩʮʬʧʫ. According to the Masoretes, ʭʩʮʬʧʫ was to be pronounced ʭʩʮʑ ʍʬ ʖʧ ʍ˗/Kekholemim, and this was
interpreted as meaning dreamers. However the difference between the two readings is very small, it could quite easily be that the Masoretes added in the incorrect vowel-
points, and so the meaning of the word was skewered. The form of the word in 11QPse would give us the pronunciation kekhalowmim. That the LXX translator also took
the meaning to be like ones consoled, this is therefore a good example of why the vowel-points that the Masoretes added should be questioned more often.

After 136:26, 11QPsa then goes onto add verses from Psalm 118, but in a slightly different order. This isn’t just a random inclusion of verses from Psalm 118, as Psalm
118 appears in 11QPsa earlier on, and manuscript 11QPsb also has a similar order amongst its fragments (the order Psalm 118:1, 15-16 is seen in 11QPsb, fragment 3). Some
scholars have suggested they’re a sort of separate Catena of sorts; but others have argued that seeing as though 11QPsa has no break between Psalm 136:26 and the verse
27 (118:1), then it is likely just a longer ending to Psalm 136. Unfortunately 11QPsb doesn’t have any verses from Psalm 136 extant, so we don’t know whether the verses
from Psalm 118 seen there follow Psalm 136, or are indeed a separate composition. As such, I have treated them here as separate verses, and haven’t just included them in
Psalm 118.

11QPsa contains a longer and alternative form of Psalm 146:9. Unfortunately the manuscript is quite fragmentary, so it’s not possible to make out all the words that the
letters extant are from, and so the translation of the full verse is not able to be completed. As it stands, it would read as such: Yahweh watches over the nations; He helps
the orphan and the widow, but the path of the wicked He impedes…of Yahweh all the earth from Him…by Him being acknowledged through all His works that He
created…His mighty works.
150
4QPsd: it is fitting to sing praises to our God. The extant portion of 11QPsa would suggest that this alternative reading (which isn’t found in either the Masoretic or the
LXX) wasn’t in 11QPsa; but seeing as though only three letters of the last word in the verse are extant in 11QPsa, this wouldn’t account for a scribal correction. As such,
seeing as though 4QPsd has more of the verse extant, I felt it was better to follow its wording, rather than rely on the Masoretic and subjective views concerning 11QPsa.

4QPsf: Your praise (plene spelling). 11QPsa has the defective spelling ʪʺʧʡʹʺ.

11QPsa: Over. 4QPsf reads ʬʲʮ which also means over or above; 11QPsa appears to have a locative ʤ- indicating as to what the “sweet praise” (ʪʺʧʥʡʹʺʳʠʡʤʡʸʲ)

11QPsa: (to) all. 4QPsf has the more common ʬʫ meaning the same thing as all. The reading of 11QPsa works with the locative ʤ- of the previous word, which isn’t found

167
11QPsa: I remember you (plene spelling). 4QPsf has the defective spelling ʪʸʫʦʠ.
168
4QPsf inserts ʯʥʩʶ meaning Zion here. 11QPsa doesn’t include it.

11QPsa: My heart I blessed you. 4QPsf reads ʪʩʺʡʤʠ ʩʰʠʩʣʥʮ meaning My might I have loved you. 4QPsf appears to have remembered verse 1, which has the exact
same wording here starting from ʬʥʫʡ, and placed it here by mistake.
170
11QPsa: may you receive. 4QPsf reads ʩʢʩʱʺ meaning may you seize.
171
11QPsa: spoken. 4QPsf(vid) reads the nifal ʸʮʠʰ meaning that has been said.
172
11QPsa: upon you. 4QPsf reads ʩʫʩʬʲ which is either a variant spelling, or is a scribal misake as ʩʫʩ- is feminine rather than masculine.
173
11QPsa: and dreams. 4QPsf reads ʺʮʬʧ meaning dreams.

11QPsa is fragmentary here, and as the Plea for Deliverance is only found in manuscripts 11QPsa and 11QPsb, it is impossible to know what words were originally in the
Psalm.

11QPsa is fragmentary at this point in Ben Sirach 51, so usually we’d look to the Greek to give some clue as to what was originally said. Unfortunately the Greek version
of Ben Sira has gone through some reworking, and so can’t be consulted to deduce what the underlying Hebrew of 11QPsa would’ve been.
