ELLY SS § S BS SN SS A Contemporary Playground Design Competition for Students MEBTITION DESIGN COMPETITION GUIDELINES PLAYPOINT 10" YEAR ANNIVERSARY A. The Competition PALARO (A Contemporary Playground Design Competition for Students) is the 10” year anniversary flagship design competition of Playpoint Philippines Inc. This design competition seeks to revolutionize modern and safe play design for people of all ages. It ‘emphasizes on the importance of active and healthy living despite the rapid changes caused by globalization B. Competition Brief Play is considered outmoded and useless, much to the detriment of people with regards to physical activity. PALARO 2017 challenges the design world to create modern recreational play facilities for kids of all ages. It emphasizes on the need of more active ‘open spaces in a congested urban city development with safe-pedestrianized parks for its users. The design competition aims to engage young designers to create a design built environment beneficial for the growth of emergent families within new cities. It intends to eradicate wrong notions that play structures, open spaces and landscape facilities are only for people from higher social classes. The designs are geared towards sustainable maintenance and development that dim fit for the Filipino Tropical setting. C. Competition Objectives Build Resilience © Develop new competencies leading to enhanced confidence and flexibility to face new challenges for children. ¢ Make significant contributions to the social, emotional and intellectual development during childhood. ‘* Increase brain activity and physical exercises for adults and older generations that help avoid major health problems. Safe Environment * Incorporate outdoor play open spaces that are free from unwanted incidents such as injury, violence and irresponsible play. Innovative Design «Integrate preventive design measures in play design that promote accessibility, ergonomics, scale or anthropometrics, age appropriateness, gender and sense stimulated. ‘© Consider play limits for persons with disability and those in need of special care. Use sustainable design techniques that are architecturally and engineered appropriate for the Filipino Tropical setting | A Contemporary Playground Design Competition for Students D. Problem The safety of each individual piece of playground equipment as well as the layout of the entire play area should be considered when designing or evaluating a playground for safety. Since falls are a very common playground hazard pattern, the installation and maintenance of protective surfacing under and around all equipment is crucial to protect its users from severe head injuries. Because all playgrounds present some challenge and because children [and kids at heart] can be expected to use equipment in unintended and unanticipated ways, supervision is highly recommended. (Public Safety Playground Handbook, 2008) Moreover, open spaces lack a great deal nowadays, which reflect a healthy environment to live in with the presence of landscape architectural elements like plants, trees, water and soil. These natural life elements are being converted into smelly, artificial, concretized areas that do not benefit people and the environment. Its in great need that areas be brought back to its former natural glory free from pollution, noise and too much hardscape surfaces. E. Challenge Design a MODERN PLAY OPEN SPACE DEVELOPMENT that will introduce an active- passive dynamic area for play, congregation, strolling and other outdoor activities taking into mind the objectives on building a resilient, safe environment with innovative design techniques. The designers are free to explore avenues for revenue, tourist attractions and mitigate site problems involving the environment. F. Context and site Parameters The chosen site, WEST SUPERBLOCK at BGC is an Ayala Land Inc. development that serves as an innovative frontier of modern urban residential open spaces. Superblock is envisioned to be a design built environment worthy of landscaped modern play open spaces for relaxation, congregation and community development. The site caters to the need for more breathable spaces between buildings and concretized structures taking into consideration the emergent middle class and upper class needs. Other public park uses are recommended to be incorporated on site. All designs must conform to the minimum standards set by the National Building Code of the Philippines and BP 344: The Accessibility Law which requires detailed attention to persons with disability. The use of these laws maybe integrated in both the design board and design brief. The presentation of these information will be the prerogative of the team. G. Registration Eligibility 1.
