NARRATIVE THEORY: A SUMMARY RELATED TO OUR DOCUMENTARY
The narrative theory I like most is Vladimir Propp’s character theory. He
suggested narrative is structured through character roles which I also believe to be true. In most films, TV shows and books there are set character roles of which are vital to the progression of a plot or storyline. However, I do think this theory is difficult to apply to texts that aren’t fictional, thus making its application to documentaries difficult. With this I mind I think the most suitable theory to apply to our documentary is Levi-Strauss’ binary opposites. Although it’s not a clear cut as good vs evil we will be attempting to format our documentary with the pros and cons of alcohol as well as the contrasting opposing views of our primary and secondary audiences.
