Description of the artifact and how it meets the standard and criteria:

This artifact is a copy of a math chapter pretest. My pretests are typically ten to fifteen
questions long and consist of the material we are going to cover in the next chapter.
This particular pretest is over operations with fractions. My students covered these
skills last year in 6th grade, so I want to see what they remember from last year.
Administering a pretest gives me background information about what my students
already know and what they struggle with. Looking at the data from the pretest helps
me plan my instruction and math groups. It is important to know where your students
are currently at in order to guide them effectively in their learning.

Reflection on the artifact:

After I give the pretest, I analyze the student results and use what I find out to help me
plan my instruction. Out of my four students, the scores were 9/10, 6/10, 4/10, and
3/10. All of my students were able to convert fractions to decimals and divide fractions.
My students all knew how to multiply fractions, but two struggled with the mixed number
in problem 8. The areas that I will need to focus my instruction on are adding and
subtracting fractions. My students did not always know to find the common
denominator before adding or subtracting. For my student that scored a 9/10, I will need
to challenge her to build a deeper conceptual knowledge of fractions and will have her
do more work with mixed numbers and word problems. The pretest will help me
develop my instruction for the chapter. At the end of the chapter, I will give a similar
assessment to see if my students have gained all of the skills that they will need.
