For three years, Sophia was my student in the clarinet studio at the Fred Fox School of Music in my final years as clarinet professor. She was a major in music education with an emphasis in clarinet performance. Asa freshman, Sophia questioned her goals, as many freshmen do. Once she determined she ‘wanted to concentrate on the clarinet, she made amazing progress. Much of her progress was a result of hard work but also because of her innate talent and wonderful musically. She developed ‘a facile technique and a beautiful clarinet sound. Her senior recital, which I attended as her former teacher, was an excellent display of her talent. ‘When Sophia first arrived at UA, she auditioned into the UA Wind Symphony but soon ended up in the UA Wind Ensemble, the most advanced wind group. She gradually advanced in that section and was eventually appointed principal clarinet. She then played in the UA Symphony Orchestra, an ensemble usually reserved for graduate students, At one point, Sophia was assigned to play bass clarinet. She took to the instrument like a fish to water! She quickly became the go-to bass clarinetist whenever and wherever needed. She performed in a variety of ensembles, in master classes given by visiting clarinetists, and on the auditions for the clarinet professor replacing me, Her reputation as bass clarinetist resulted in her becoming a sub in the Tucson Symphony Orchestra, quite a feat for an undergraduate. Sophia was always a great pleasure with whom to work. She has a wonderful welcoming personality and is a very intuitive, thoughtful and intelligent person. T am sure Sophia will be successful in any endeavor she chooses.
