Capstone Project

Dear Ms. Guzman,

There are multiple issues in our society but one that truly does matter is racial profiling

since it happens to people in our society. Many people become affected and at times others are

influenced to judge others based off their looks. Racial profiling is the use of race or ethnicity as

grounds for suspecting someone of having committed an offense. Although there are many

people being affected there is a specific group that is targeted the most and those are Hispanics.

Why are Hispanics the main targets to be racially profiled?

The issue with racial profiling is that this is discrimination. Blacks and Hispanics are the

two major groups who are targeted. The people who belong to those race become afraid to go out

and believe they do not belong in society. Soon enough it is spread worldwide causing for

everyone to be afraid of those certain people. This is a problem because everywhere Hispanics or

Blacks are seen others automatically assume they are in danger. This issue mainly affects the

person being targeted because they begin to develop stress and become emotionally/ physically

affected. According to the Ontario Human Rights Commission people who are targeted are

affected emotionally and physically because of the things others have to say about them. Many

people do not know how to cope with being racially profiled and become insecure of themselves.

The use of racial profiling does not only affect others but it affects my family and I.

There has been several incidents where we have been racially profiled. This affects me because

all those things have been said constantly run through my head. When we see the police I as well

as my family get scared. This is a constant thing so I believe other Hispanics feel the same way.

If nothing is done then it will continue to happen and soon enough begin to spread. People need

to realize and see all the harm that is being done. People should not be feeling afraid of the police

or even others around them everyone needs to feel safe and feel like they belong.

As of right now I have conducted research on the groups that are mainly affected and

those will be Blacks and Hispanics. The factors that contribute to racial profiling are the

individual's race, ethnicity, religion, and national origin. People often judge based off looks and

those who look dangerous are stopped. The possible effects for this being done are emotionally.

psychologically, mentally, financially, and physically affected. Many say that people are not

viewed equally so they believe something is wrong with the person being racially profiled.

I am not quite sure as to how I will address the project due to it being a big issue. I do

know that many people are not well aware of racial profiling. I feel like I should teach others in

our community about it and let them know exactly what it is. I need to have a workshop where

people will come and I give them information upon racial profiling. I need to contact my

principal to see if it is okay to have the auditorium in order to conduct the workshop. I will need

around one week to plan the workshop then on a weekend teach it to others who are interested. I

could even possibly help them out in letting them know what to do in a situation where they are

racially profiled.

I still need to know what other actions I can do in order to help out those who are going

through this issue. Being racially profiled is a big issue but it is hard to actually make a change

since it is done everywhere. I need to know exactly what to do since it affects many and it is hard

to be stopped. I may want to find out who in my community or school has been racially profiled

before. Maybe it is not a big issue in my community so I may want to search other communities.

Even though I know this issue may not be huge for others or even matter to me it really

does matter and I want to do anything possible to help those who have been or are even being

racially profiled. I know how they feel and it is not something that people should be put through

since it is inhumane to judge others based off looks. People need to learn that not all Latinos are

criminals or dangerous. Hispanics are always thought to be the worst people but in reality they

are not all the same. I want to let many know how this race is affected and what is being done is

not right.

Sincerely,

Jazmin Hernandez
