CHAPTER I

INTRODUCTION

A recreational hub provides a central location for the citizens and visitors of a

city or town, to enjoy high quality fitness, education, arts and culture, aquatics,

recreation and social opportunities. Recreation is the expenditure of time in a manner

designed for therapeutic refreshment of one’s body or mind. A time in which individuals

are not compelled to do anything, and are free to choose to relax or to take part of a

leisure activity. Such facility serves as year-round central gathering places for

community members of all ages and interest. (Mitchell, 2013).

Building a recreational hub offers opportunities for the excess of positive

benefits to community members. Some of these include: keeping kids occupied and

off the streets; increased community awareness; a “community hub” and cohesive

sense of community where friends and family can meet; exercise, fitness and

conditioning; fun and entertainment; learning and education; relaxation; healthy

lifestyles; social benefits; group participation and multigenerational interaction.
