Report & recommendations on conditions survey conducted jointly by AE & RCD for Mahatma Gandhi Setu Superstructure at Central Hinge & Expansion Joint locations on 16/01/2018 Attached is the report of deflections & movements as above said. The report is self explanatory. Deflections have reached maximum 100mm at P37 which is exceeding to a wider margin of allowable 45mm deflection taking account of long term pre-stressing losses, At various locations, there is no movement at all at expansion Joints defeating the very idea of providing Finger type expansion joints to cater for the longitudinal & transverse movement of deck through expansion joints. This gives the cause of failure of Central Hinge Bearings (CHB) provided in the webs at mid-span locations. Failure of CHB & excessive deflections will further cause detrimental effect on substructures & foundations of the bridge. If further heavy live loads are continued, then due to Shear failure at mid spans (because of failure of CHB) & losses of tensile stress ( evident in the formexcessive deflections)substantial amount of tensile loads (combined effect of live & dead loads) will further get transferred to Pier & foundations causing additional stresses in the same.
