Types of Menus
Menu
 Is a French word which means “small” or “detailed” and has come to mean a list of dishes that
are to be served at a meal or the meal itself

 It’s classified into several types

1. Cyclical menu

2. A La Carte Menu

3. Plat Du Jour Menu

4. Table D’Hote Menu

5. Function Menu

6. Carte Du Jour Menu

Cyclical menu
 Is a set of carefully planned menus rotated according to a definite pattern

 This enables planner to draw conclusions as to the comparative popularity of different menu

A La Carte Menu
 Translated as “from the card”

 This type of menu is served in deluxe or first class restaurant

 The dishes that make up the menu are changed according to season

Plat Du Jour Menu


 Interpreted as “specialty of the house”

 The dishes are changed daily or may be featured for a short period of time

 This is actually a modified form of a la carte

 Served in medium sized restaurants


Table D’Hote Menu
 Translated as “table of the host”

 Consists of multi-course dinner at a fixed price and is usually served to all guests at a specified
time

Function Menu
 Called as “special menu”

 Offered during special occasions like weddings, baptismal, parties, anniversaries and the like

 Orders are placed far in advance before the celebration

Carte Du Jour Menu


 It is a combination of table d’hote, a la carte and plat du jour menus

 Printed daily in two copies. One for lunch and one for dinner
