What was one key idea about gender equality you found interesting in the HeForShe
speech? Why? Give at least one example.
The key idea I found most interesting in Emma Watson’s HeForShe speech was that
everyone benefits from a more equal world. Sterytypes and prejudice extends not
only to women, but to men. More importantly, these are the stereotypes that divde
women and men. "Men, I would like to take this opportunity to extend your formal
invitation. … Gender equality is your issue, too. … I've seen young men suffering
from mental illness, unable to ask for help, for fear it would make them less of a
men—or less of a man. I've seen men made fragile and insecure by a distorted sense
of what constitutes male success. Men don't have the benefits of equality, either." In
this quote, Emma Watson talks about how men also suffer because of gender
stereotypes. Emma Watson makes the point that if there was an equality between
men and women, people won’t suffer from stereotypes and we will be living in a
more equal world. I found this idea the most interesting because Emma Watson
explained about how men are also affected by society’s views just like women.
Emma Watson used views from both genders to reinforce her argument.

2. Justify your choices of visual techniques on your poster. How do they emphasise the
message you are trying to communicate? In your answer, refer to at least two visual
techniques you have used.
In my poster, I have gone for a black and white scheme using silhouettes of people
to emphasise that anyone can represent either a repressive society be those being
repressed. My poster shows two people in the centre in a cage where I have
replaced the bars with some gender stereotypes. Around the cage, I have put
multiple silhouettes of people to represent society’s impact on an individual. The
bars represent the prejudice and stereotypes society places on men and women,
which entrap all of us. The divide is created by an overbearing society that is larger
than the individual, represented by the size and dominance of the crowd,
heightened by the miniscule nature of the individuals. Words and divisive ideas keep
individuals trapped, alone and depressed. It is not until society breaks the cycle of
setting gender roles that individuals can become free.
