Custom Installation of the Tandberg Series 6 may be accomplished by mounting it up to an 85° angle or in the horizontal position. In its wood base it can be mounted on a slidedrawer assembly. It is important that sufficient space be provided to allow for placement of the interconnecting cables. It is also impor- tant to allow for adequate and sufficient ventilation in custom installations. An empty space should be directly above the unit to assure a supply of cooling air Dimensions and space requirements for the Stereo Tape Deck are shown in Figure A. connecting Input and Output Jacks are shown in Figure B. Jour track recording or playing Recording techniques have been so refined that it is now possible to quadruple recording time by using only one quarter (14) of the tape width for a single channel Monaural Recording. Thus the tape in actual use is four times as long as when used for single full track recording, and twice as long as when used for two track Stereo Recording. After completely recording the first quarter of the tape, lift both reels off the spindles and reverse their positions so that the FULL seel is again on the left turntable, See Fig. F. This correctly orientates the the tape so that the second un- recorded quarter will pass over the record head. By repeating this three times, each quarter of the tape will be recorded giving you four separate tracks. ‘The Stereo Magnetic Heads on your Model 6 each cover one-quarter of the tape width, ‘The upper Channel (No, 1) HEAD ARRANGEMENT (ERASE-RECORD- PLAY) functions for quarter track No. 1 or quarter track No. 4, and is acti- vated by RECORD’ Push-Button No. 1 or ‘PLAYBACK’ Push-Button No. 1 The Lower Channel (No. 2) HEAD ARRANGEMENT functions for quarter tracks No. 2 or No. 3, and is activated by ‘RECORD’ Push-Button No. 2, or ‘PLAYBACK’ Push-Button No. 2. For ‘Stereo Record or Play’ both HEAD ARRANGEMENTS function simultane- ously for Quarter Tracks 1 and 3, or Quarter Tracks 2 and 4, Activate BOTH ‘RECORD’ Push-Buttons No. 1, and No. 2, or BOTH 'PLAYBACK’ Push- Buttons No. 1 and No. 2. To Stop ‘PLAYBACK’ and tape motion, press the ‘START-STOP’ Push-Button. Step 8. Rewind the tape unless you wish to play back the other tracks on a fourtracks tape. If you want to play back the other tracks, do not rewind the tape but reverse the reels as described in «Four Track Recording or Playingy on the previous page Always keep the same tape on the same reel to keep track of the recorded programs when filing. i monitoring To be sure you are recording exactly what you wish and that it is being properly recorded on the tape, it is highly desirable to listen in or Monitor’ the recording. Put the S-on-$ Switch in position A-B-test. Simply connect Headphones to the Tandberg OUTPUT JACKS and LISTEN to the program BEFORE it is recorded on the tape, A-test. Press the ‘PLAYBACK’ Push-Button(s) for the channel(s) being recorded, and you listen to the program immediately AETER it is recorded, B+test. In this way you compare the "RE- CORDED" program to the original. (A-B Test.) Amplifier/Speaker System(s) can be used in place of Head- phones for monitoring. However, if the program being recorded originates from the same amplifier(s) used for monitoring ex- cessive feedback may occur. In this case headphone monitoring is recommended. 12 Peer When recording a single channel (Monaural) you can utilize all Tandberg INPUTS to mix up to four signals (TWO Micro- phone, or TWO high level and TWO low level, or one mic and one high and one low level into one Monaural recording. ) Nove that when one mic jack is plugged in, the connection to the two other inputs for the same channel is broken. Both Recording Volume Controls are used to achieve correct mixing and recording level. The total mixed signal registers on the ONE RECORDING LEVEL INDICATOR for the track being recorded When recording two channels (Stereo) you can utilize three inpats to mix-up to two signals per channel or track. (ONE Microphone, or ONE high level and ONE low level.) The Recording Volume Controls and Level Indicators function for both tracks being recorded. sound on sound recording To ADD Sound to a previously recorded sound (On Track No. 1, Channel No. 1) Step 1. Start tape motion by pressing ‘START-STOP” Push-But- ton. You are now recording on Track No, 3 (Channel 2) the previously recorded sound from Track No. 1 and the added sound from Microphone ‘The Record Volume Control for Channel 1 (Upper Track-Upper Knob) adjusts recording volume from the pre-recorded ‘Track No. 1, and Record Volume Control for Channel 2 (Lower Track-Lower Knob) adjusts recording volume of the added Mi- crophone Sound, Total of both signais is indicated on Channel 2-Record Level Indicator. With the connected Headphones (or Amplifier-Speaker System) you can ‘listen in’ or Monitor the "Sound-On-Sound’ recording, or simply press PLAYBACK Push-Button No. 2’ and you listen to the ‘Sound-On-Sound’ program immediately AFTER il is re- corded Note: To avoid disconnecting the mastertrack do not connect a second microphone to other Microphone Input Jack during ‘Sound on Sound’ “ recording 13 EVASE Previous recordings will be automatically erased during the recording process. Before recording, therefore, be sure the tape does not contain a program you want to keep. If you record on a pre-recorded tape and the new recording does not completely overlap the previously recorded program, some portions of that program will remain on the tape. Erasing the entire pre-recorded tape before recording will therefore mini- mize editing 14 To completely ERASE a pre-recorded four-track tape, run the tape in the ‘STEREO RECORD MODE? with both Recording Volume Controls set to ’ZERO’ thus erasing two of the four tracks, After completely running the tape, lift both reels off the spindles and reverse their positions so that the FULL reel is again on the LEFT turntable. Then run tape in STEREO RE- CORD MODE again, thereby erasing the remaining two tracks remole operation The Model 6 can be started or stopped from a remote location with an ‘ACCESSORY FOOT PEDAL’ available through your Tandberg Dealer. Step 1 MODE’ Place equipment in ‘RECORD’ or ‘PLAYBACK Step 2. Connect FOOT PEDAL to Three-Contact Socket on back of Recorder. Step 3. To start tape motion, depress FOOT PEDAL. As soon as you release FOOT PEDAL tape motion STOPS. automatte stop To automatically stop the Tape at the end of each track, Me- tallized, Leader Tape must be spliced to the tape ends. This Metallized Tape is available at your Tandberg dealer. It is made by most Magnetic Tape manufacturers. Simply splice 14” of Metallized Leader Tape to the tape ends. ‘Thus the Metallized Leader will stop the recorder at the end of each track without unthreading the tape from the reel. 15 splicing, editing and storing your tape If good quality magnetic tape is used, recorded material can be stored for years without reduction in sound quality. In keeping your tapes over a period of time, it is often desirable to edit them, keeping just the best portions. This may be done by winding them on smaller empty reels or combining them on one large reel. To re-join cut-out portions or combine several parts together the tape is spliced. In cutting the tape, however, remember that you ae cutting the WHOLE tape of four tracks. 16 To splice two pieces of tape: (See Fig. H.) (A) Place the two ends over each other so they overlep. (B) Cut through both together at an angle. (C) Place the ends together so that they touch and apply splicing tape to the shiny side of the tape at the same angle as the cut. (D) Cut away the excess splicing tape on bath sides, cutting a little into the tape to make sure the splice is not wider than the tape itself. maintenance Your Tandberg Series 6 has been engineered mechanically and electronically to require a bare minimum of service and adjust- ment. Indiscriminate tinkering will result in damage. In the event your Tandberg requires service, consult your dealer for the name and address of the nearest Tandberg Service Sta- tion Do NOT Lubricate any parts of the mechanism. demagnetizing the heads Magnetic Heads may occasionally acquire a degree of permanent magnetization which will result in an increase in Noise Level, Distortion, and a partial erasure of high-frequencies on any re- corded tape which passes over them. The Tandberg model 6 has built in an automatic demagnetizing circuit for record and erase head, which is active each time the record buttons are released. The Playback head can never in normal use be actuated neither from magnetic fields or currents which can magnetize the head. Should, however, some of the critical points by accident (for example from a magnetized tool) be magnetized you can demagnetize the critical points. lo demagntttz Step 1.
