Active and Passive voice

I. Objectives
By the end of the lesson, the students should be able to:

 Define 'active voice' and 'passive voice'

 Compare and Contrast active voice and passive voice
 Identify the voice of the verb as active or passive
 Convert passive voice into active voice and vice versa
 Construct sentences using active and passive voice.

B. Lesson Proper

Motivation
 The teacher will begin by showing a ball in class and dropping the ball on the floor.
 The teacher will then ask students to describe what happened and will write it on the
board .= the teacher dropped the ball on the floor
 The teacher will ask the students to identify the subject (teacher), the verb (dropped) and
the object of the verb (the ball).
 The teacher will drop the ball again, but this time, will ask students to describe what
happened starting with “The ball…”. Students should say, “The ball was bounced bythe
teacher.” Write this sentence on the board and ask them to identify the subject in this
sentence (the ball) the verb (was bounced), and the object of the verb.
 The teacher will guide students to compare and contrast the two sentences. Ask them
which the think is active and which is passive. Confirm that they understand that the first
sentence is in the active voice because the subject, the teacher, actively bounced the ball.
Contrast this with the second sentence, which is in the passive voice because the subject
 (the ball) is NOT actively doing anything. Instead something is happening to it by
someone else.

 The teacher will start to introduce the topic by giving the definition of Active voice and
Passive voice
 The teacher will give more samples of sentences in Active voice and Passive voice
 The teacher will compare and contrast Active voice from passive by discussing when is it
usually used? and proceed to Exercise no. 1

Application

 Students will be grouped according to their side of seats and will be asked to vote on
contestant that will represent their group
 The teacher will begin by displaying the list of sentences in Active/Passive voice one by
one
 The first set of questionnaires will require the volunteers to identify the sentence as
Active or passive and write down A if active and P if Passive on the board, the first one
to write down the correct answer wins a point
 The Second set of questionnaires will require the volunteers to convert the sentences in
Active voice into passive and vice versa. The first one to write down the correct answer
wins a point.

The Teacher will further explain the usage of Active and Passive voice and proceed to giving a
10 item quiz

IV. Evaluation

Write the correct answers on a sheet of paper.

A. Write A in the blanks before the number if the sentence is active and P if passive.

voice.
