occHirakud Dam with Reservoir
1, Introduction:
Hirakud Dam Project is built across river Mahanadi at about 15.0Kms.
upstream of Sambalpur town in the State of Orisa. This happens to be the first
post independence major multipurpose river valley project in India. The dam is
6.0Kms from NiH.6.The nearest al head is Hirakud alway station (ECo.R) which
is80Kms from the dam site
The Project provides 1,59,106 Hects.of Kharif and 1,08,385 Hects. of Rabi
Irigation in the districts of Sambalpur, Bargarh, Bolangir and Subarnapur. The
water released through power house irrigates further 2,51,000 Hects of CC.A.in
Mahanadi delta. installed capacity for power generation is 347.86MW.after up-
gradation, through its two power houses at Burla, at the right bank toe and
CCipilima, at 22.0 Kms downstream of dam. Besides, the project provides flood
protection to 9,500 sq.kms of delta area in undivided districts of Cuttack and Pur.
2. Brief History of the Project : Se
‘After high floods of 1937, Sir M.Visveswaraya suggested to undertake detailed
investigation for storage reservoirs in Mahanadi basin to tackle problem of floods
in Mahanadi delta. In 1945, it was decided, under the Chairmanship of DrB..
“Ambedkar, the then Member of Labour in Govt of india, that the potentialities of
river Mahanadi should be fruitfully and expeditiously investigated for multipurpose
se. Central Water-ways ligation and Navigation Commission took up the work.
‘The foundation stone of Hirakud dam was laid by Sir Howthrone Lewis, the then
Governor of Orissa, on 15th March 1946. The Project report was submitted to
Government in une 1947.The first batch of concrete was lid by Pandit Jawaharlal
"Nehru on 12th April 1948.The project was formally inaugurated by the fist Prime
Minister of independent incia, Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru on 13th January 1957.
Power generation alongwith water supply fr irigation started progressively from
1956 and full potential was achieved by 1966.3. Project Features :
Hirakud dam sa composite structure of earth concrete and masonry. The
Main dam, having an overall length of .8Km, spans between hill Lamlungrion
