SPEAKING
YOUR FAVOURITE BOOK
My favourite book is “global warming in the 21st century” . The authour of this book is Dr. David
Fletcher, an eminent scientist from the university of Washington. I got this book as a gift from my
uncle on my 18th birthday as a gift. Even though it has been nearly 5 years since I got this as a gift, I
still remember it like it was just yesterday. The book was published by oxford university press in the
year 1998.
This book has about 3 sections –causes, effects and solutions. In the first section, the author identifies
proliferation of industries to be the main cause of global warming. The industries leave out untreated
CO2 into the atmosphere which creates a hole in the ozone layer. The author points out how this in
turn lets UV rays reach up to earth’s surface and heats it up. The author also demonstrates how this
causes the polar ice caps to melt and cause a rise in the ocean levels throughout the world. The
consequence of this can be devastating(catastrophic) which he explains in the second section. Many
coastal cities around the world could submerge under water & the weather patterns around the world
could become erratic ( Inconsistent) . He also proposes solutions in the third section like afforestation
and promoting sustainable development practices.
I really adore this book for an array of reasons. Firstly, this book is based on a contemporary topic and
a topic of general interest. The author explains everything in simple language based on real life
context. . He also gives a lucid (clear) and a cogent (convincing) account of the current situation we
find ourselves in. Quite commendable is the way in which technical aspects of the issue is dealt with.
Though the author focuses on the global nature of the crisis, he also provides plenty of space as to
how people will be affected locally. He uses a lot of humor to drive home the point and make us
understand the depth of the problem. He also employs a lot of anecdotes to help us relate to the issue
being discussed . Finally this book is really exciting, edifying (enlightening), and interesting .Hence
for all the afore mentioned reasons this is my favourite book.
