Conclusions

Accomplishing a sea voyage is not based only on the experience of the navigation
officers onboard but also on a meticulous planning. Aspects like the carefully planning of the
Passage Plan, drawing the route on map and introducing it correctly in ECDIS and GPS will
make the vessel monitoring much easier.
The technology presented nowadays onboard the ships along with the rapid GPS spread
makes the determining of ship’s position more easily to maneuver. Nevertheless, the modern
navigator must be aware of the factors which can influence the accuracy of plotted position
taking into consideration the GPS precision and the used reference ellipsoid on which was
projected the navigation chart.
The Bridge Team Management must represent the base of each team of navigation
officers, helping its members understand better their main duties, the importance of cooperation
and the role of a better participation, creating a pleasant work place, where everyone’s ideas are
listened, the professional evolution is encouraged and the individual moral values of every crew
member are respected.
Although coming from a family of seafarers and listening to sea stories, only on board I
came to realize that being a seafarer is a very demanding and responsible job. It is about working
in a team and being aware that one’s actions, or lack of it, have an impact on your fellow mates,
environment and vessel. The sea shapes characters, pushes limits and tests abilities and serving
on board gives fair and equal opportunities to all seafarers, based entirely on their knowledge and
abilities.
