Quote – “Crank the handle on a music box, and a tune begins to play. But what’s happening iside the
box to create those notes? Musical machinery is at work!” (Myers 20)

Summary – Inside of a music box, as you turn the handle, a gear rotates to roll a drum that is covered in
teeth. The bumps, also called pins, pluck the teeth to create a note. The sizes of each tooth changes the
note it’s playing. Multiple teeth when played together, can play music.

Paraphrasing – Cranking the handle of a music box turns a gear, which rolls a “drum”. As the drum rolls,
the pins pluck the “teeth” to play one note. The longer the teeth, the lower the notes go and vice-versa.
Multiple notes can be played together at once.
