1.Palestine
History of the region-10,000 years ago Jewish people moved into Palestine and they referred the
land as “Land Given By God”. 6 years ago muslims told Jews they were on their land. End of
WW1 in 1918 British took control. After WW2 British people in 1947 decided to give Israel
independence. Ruled by numerous groups.
2. Kosovo
Demographic information-Mainly muslim, 2% roman catholic, ethnic wise, mostly Albanian also
its main language, younger population, literacy is 91.9%
History of the region-2008 declared self-independence, small country located near the Adriatic
Sea, 70 years after the battle of Kosovo it was conquered by the Ottoman Empire
Current situation-Mostly younger people because they don’t have as much advancement in
medical care, current president is Hashim Thaci
5. N. Korea/S. Korea
Demographic information-Large amount of ages 25-54 years old, (South Korea) 51 million
people, mainly Catholic, (North Korea) 25 million people, more than 50% of people don’t follow
anyone or have a religion
History of the region-People have lived on the Korean Peninsula since 668 A.D., When the
Korean peninsula was split between them it was called the 38th parallel, Whole peninsula was
once conquered by Japan
Current situation-Kim Jung Ill died in 2011 leaving Kim Jung Un to take over, United States is
still at war with North Korea, if North Korea attacked us currently they wouldn’t break the law,
we’ve been at war with them since 1950
5. Cyprus
Demographic information-Represents Greek and Turkish, Many people from Cyprus have
immigrated in large numbers, they mainly have moved to the united kingdom and English
speaking places, mainly speak Greek and English, 2004 96% of Cyprus were Greek Orthodox
History of the region-First known settlement was dated as early as 9,000 years ago, Independent
in 1950 from Britain, population 1,221,549
Current situation-Divided since 1974 when Turkey invaded the North, Currently independent
from fighting off Turks and Greeks, Joined European Union in 2004
6. South Ossetia
History of the region-Small part of Georgia, borders Russia which has caused the biggest conflict
because RUssia has once invaded them, Separated by south and north because of the end of the
Soviet Union
Current situation-Fighting against the border and everyone is against Russia’s way
7. Somaliland
History of the region-portion once owned by Italy, older than ancient Egypt, mentioned in Bible,
main religion Islam, h
8. Western Sahara
History of the region-First became independent in November 14, 1975. Located in North
Western Africa. Main town Laayoune. Supposedly claimed by the Kingdom of Morocco
