Up until 1990’s only knew of the planets in our solar system
Using algebra, one can show that the luminosity of the reflected host star light from an extrasolar planet is related to the host star luminosity. If there is a planet whose orbit passes in front of the star in our line of vision, we will see a slight dip in the amount of starlight that reaches the earth. The new telescope could image the planets so we could perform a spectroscopy. Then we could determine if it was suitable for life.
