ARTIFICIAL KIDNEYS

This paper presents analysis of development so far and propositions for future growth on
artificial kidney technology, as well as in depth look at both of it's primary components:
hemofilter and bioreactor. Kidney transplants are one of the most common transplantation
operations done today, but even so waiting lists for one of these are enormous. People, until
they get a transplant, have to undergo dialysis threatment daily if done via peritoneal
dialysis or every two days if done via hemodialysis. The logical solution to this problem are
artificial kidneys. These devices' primary function is to filter blood, and they do this by using
silicon nanotechnology. Also novel molecular coatings which makes silicon membranes
blood compatible are also analysed.
