Lines. We’ve all got our opinions. That’s how it should
be because they’re just central to any angler’s casting,
presentation and control.
“Buy the best line you can afford and then look after it. Dirty,
gritted lines crack. You lose distance, accuracy, control and wear
rod rings. Don’t stand on your lines either, pushing them into
the mud and grit. Think how you store them. don’t leave lines
damp and festering for long periods. Wash them periodically
in warm water with just a hint of detergent.” Nick Hart.
“Buy the line you actually need. Double tapers are great for
turning over in tight, close situations. Fish at distance, though,
and you’ll be looking at a weight-forward. Weight-forwards
are good across the board still, running and salt. If you’re
doing a lot of salt work, though, it’s worth buying a dedicated
saltwater line. You’ll notice the difference. Intermediate
lines are useful, too and if you’re serious about stillwaters,
build up a range of different sinkers.” Howard Croston.
“Lines with as little memory as possible are great. I like
them to lie flat as pancakes. That’s where Hardy excels.
Fly fishing is about presentation as much as anything else
and a barbed wire line won’t give you a chance.” John Bailey.
“Match the line to the rod. Too many people don’t understand
how critical this is. A light rod will be swamped by
a heavy line. A heavy rod won’t even nod to a light one.
