WE VILLAGES’ WORK IN CHINA
In 2002 there was a deadly explosion ata firework factory in China where 38 children, aged eight to 11
‘were working to pay for their schooling. This disaster brought to light the stark contrast between those
living in urban and rural parts of China
Home to 41 diferent ethnic minorities, China's rural communities are comprised of approximately 52 milion
people living in poverty. Despite China's considerable economic development, the benefits have not been
Uistributed equally aoross the country, The mave toward globalization has largely benefited the country's
booming cities while perpetuating the merginalizetion and neglect of rural communities. Compared to their
Urban counterparts, rural communities are often without access to portable water, arable land or adequate
health end educational services. Urban schools in China receive significantly more attention and investment
by the central government, which serves to perpetuate the gap between rural and urben communities in
both the quality of educational fecilities and educational programming,
“Through WE Villages, we work in partnership with communities in China's rural provinces to eliminate the
barriers that prevent children from accessing education. With a focus on eliminating both gender inequality,
as well as the developmental gap between urban and rural centres, WE empowers these communities
to become the main agents of chenge in ther lives. Many community members have demonstrates their
‘Commitment iy education by donating the land an which the school is built, constructing and fixing damaged
roads in order to bring in building supplies, and most importantly, sending their children to school. Through
these community partnerships, WE is working to break the cycle of poverty in rural Chinese communities
‘and transform the face of education inthe country.
