Color theory:

EQ: How does knowing the color wheel help us become better artists?
Learning Intention:
What are the primStuary colors?
What are the Secondary colors?
What are the Intermediate colors?
How do we create the color of the color wheel?
How do we properly use/care for a paintbrush?

Objectives:
Students will identify the colors of the color wheel.
Students will identify the primary and secondary colors.
Students will identify what intermediate colors are.
Students will understand what complementary colors are.
Students will understand what tints and shades are.

Using Knowledge of Structures and Functions

Students will:
Describe, both orally and in writing, how the various elements and principles of design functions
to evoke different responses in the viewer of the artwork.
Select and use various elements and principles of design to communicate personal ideas in
their artwork.

Reflecting upon and Assessing the Merits of Their Work and the Work of Others Analyze their
own artworks and those of others and describe improvements that could be made.

Materials:
Color wheel handout Color wheel
Tempera paint. Paint brush

Procedure:
*Teacher will discuss the basics of the color theory. (I.e. complimentary colors, tint, shades,
primary and secondary colors)

Teacher will review the rules of the classroom for painting. Students will work together to create
all of the colors of the color wheel with only the primary colors.

Assessment
Teacher will circulate to check for understanding. Teacher will ok every color scheme. Students
will have a gallery tour and discussion if time.
50% craftsmanship/painting technique
50% color theory outcome
