Forces and Motion

Objective: ​To determine how variables like GPE (Gravitational Potential Energy), friction, and
mass, affect the speed and momentum of a moving object.

Materials

Day 1:

● One small marble

● One metric ruler
● One meter stick marble track
● Seven small textbooks
● One sharpie
● Online stopwatch
● Masking tape for marking [5] distances
 Data Collection:

1. Set up the # of textbooks at the edge of your group’s table and measure and mark the [5]
distances as directed.

2. Measure the height of 1 textbook, 3 textbooks, 5 textbooks, and 7 textbooks in centimeters

and insert the measurement under the # of books on the data table as a point of reference
[GPE] for later.

3. Set up a data table to record the time in seconds it takes the marble to reach each of the 5
distances in centimeters for 1 textbook, 3 textbooks, 5 textbooks, and 7 textbooks.

4. Collect the data and record it in the group’s data table.
