NET ALLOWABLE BEARING CAPACITY (NABC) OF FOUNDATIONS

FOUNDATION ENGINEERING DESIGN CALCULATION
INTRODUCTION

For evaluating net allowable bearing capacity of shallow foundations on granular soils:

Shear Considerations
Adopting a factor of safety of 3 against shear failure, net safe bearing capacity, q, from shear consideration:

For square or circular foundations: q = 0.105N²BRw' + 0.314(100+N²)DRw (1)

For strip foundations: q = 0.157N²BRw' + 0.262(100+N²)DRw (2)

Settlement Considerations
Net permissible bearing capacity, q, for 25mm settlement is computed using Meyerhof equation modified by
Teng.

q = 34.5(N-3)[(B+0.305)/(2B)]²kdRw' (3)

Where: kd = depth factor = (1+D/B) <= 2

B & D = Foundation width & depth, respectively
L = Foundation length
Rw & Rw' = Reduction factors for water table effect
N = Standard penetration resistance in blows/300mm

From both shear and settlement considerations, the least value of q obtained from equations (1), (2) & (3) is
considered as the Net Allowable Bearing Capacity (NABC).

NET ALLOWABLE BEARING CAPACITY
Shear Consideration:
(Square or Circular Foundation)
q= [(0.105N²BRw') + 0.314(100+N²)DRw]
q= [(0.105(17.00)²)(5.00)(0.69)+ 0.314(100+17.00²)(1.50)(1.00)] = 287 kN/m²
(Strip Foundation)
q= [(0.157N²BRw') + 0.262(100+N²)DRw]
q= [(0.157(17.00)²)(5.00)(0.69)+ 0.262(100+17.00²)(1.50)(1.00)] = 308 kN/m²
Settlement Consideration:
q= {(34.5)(N-3)[(B+0.305)/(2B)]²(kd)(Rw')}
q= 34.5(17.00-3)[(5.00+0.305)/(2x5.00)]²(1.30)(0.69) = 121 kN/m², Governs
Hence, the Net Allowable Bearing Capacity q all = 121 kN/m²
kN/m², Governs
