Condition Based Maintenance (Predictive Maintenance) begin applied in electrical system, because it can

avoid suddenly failure. Modern-maintenance scenario is monitoring, diagnosing, and estimating the rest
of treatment years. And if it is possible, can extend the life time of equipment. The purpose of modern-
maintenance scenario is improving availability, reliability, efficiency, and safety of equipment.

This chapter will discuss basic principles of modern maintenance which based on predictive maintenance
with estimating the rest years of electrical equipment or commonly known as Remaining Life Assessment
(RLA). To support RLA processes, this chapter also explain how to examine the electrical equipment that
supposed to do.

Electrical system on geothermal power plant is integration of components. The main component which is
needing RLA is electric machinery i.e. generator, CWP motor, and transformer.

The main reason of Electric-machinery failure is commonly resulted from isolation breakdown, thus RLA
of electric machinery is commonly dominated by isolation test. Isolation aging is affected by the amount
of start and stop, the frequency of start and stop, and big variation of load. Isolation material get aging
because of various factor or stress. The main stress is thermal, ambient, electric, and mechanic stresses.

The other reasons are environment condition and contamination. Figure 2.2 shows the survey result about
failure causes of stator’s windings which is done by IEEE and EPRI.

Stress or environment condition is important for deciding isolation life. The most important environment
conditions are water which settles in winding, bearing oil or system-seal oil, humidity, aggressive
chemicals, abrasive particles, dirt and radiation.
