Domenico Gabrieli
transcribed for Solo Tuba by
R. Winston Morris
about the composer
Domenico Gabrieli (c. 1640-1690) was an Italian composer of the mid-baroque period. He
composed 12 operas and various instrumental works including many cello compositions, An excellent
cellist, he was one of the earliest composers to write for unaccompanied cello, He performed in the
Orchestra of San Petronio in Bologna, was a member of the Bologna Philharmonic Academy and in
1683 became its president,
about the composition
RICERCAR was composed for solo cello and in its original edition comprised three movements,
The first two sections offer suitable contrast and are typical of a common baroque binary structure
This tuba edition is recommended for rectal use and/or practice material
rebearsal and performance suggestions
The Grave section should be performed with a very full sound at a deliberately paced slow
tempo.
The pause between the Grave and the Allegro sections should be relatively short,
The suggested tempo for the Allegro section should result in a clean performance, The character
of this section will suffer if a too fast tempo is attempted, Strive for precise articulation and exact
pitch placement throughout, Breathing is critical and must be fast and deep. Nose sniffs may be
heeded (or desired) between cighth note patterns in addition to the suggested breathing points.
Obvious breathing opportunities have not been marked.
