General Motors Passlock Anti-theft System System Overview Last year General Motors Corporation introduced a new theft deterrent system called Passlock. In many respects, asslock is very similar to the VATS or Passkey system. However, the new system is much more sophisticated than Passkey. Passlock was introduced in the 1995 Cavalier Z-24 and the 1995 Sunfire GT. In 1996 all trim levels of the Cavalier and Sunfire, as well as the Pontiac Grand Am, Buck Skylark and Oldsmobile Achieva ate equipped with the system. Vehicle that are equipped with Passlock easy to identify, as they will have a “theft system” indicator on the instrument cluster. The “theft system” indicator will light solid when the ignition is in the RUN position, ‘and go out shortly after the motor is running. This is important to note since GM will most likely transition the Passlock system into many more models. ‘The Passlock system consists of four parts: the Passlock key cylinder, the ignition switch, the instrument cluster panel (IPC) and the powertrain control module (PCM). The system requires that the key cylinder be mechanically turned using a key. When the Key cylinder is properly tumed, it generates @ resistance code (R-Code) which is sent to the IPC. Unlike Passkey systems of the past, the Passlock system must see the correct resistance code at the cor- rect time. When the ignition switch is tuned to the crank position, the “Bulb Check” wire is switched to ground. ‘This starts a time window during which the IPC analyzes the R-Code. If the R-Code is valid and is received in the proper window of time, the IPC sends a code via data bus to the PCM to enable the fuel injection system. If the key cylinder itself is pulled out or damaged, it will not generate the resistance code and the vehicle will not run. Please note that unlike Passkey systems which prevent the vehicle from cranking, the Passlock system will let the car crank and possibly run for a short time before the fuel injectors shut off. ‘The following pages contain information on how to test and successfully bypass the Passlock system in order to do remote start. Included for reference are several figures, and interface diagram that will work with any DEI* remote start system, as well as a trouble shooting guide. ‘Although we believe the information herein to be accurate, we strongly recommend that you verify any circuit before interfacing with it. Directed Electronics, Inc. assumes no liability and accepts no responsibility for possible installation errors with regard to the enclosed information. Interfacing with the GM Passlock System For Remote Start Operation 1, Remove three 7mm (T25 Torx) bolts that secure lower steering column cover. 2. Remove lower and upper steering column covers. 3. Interface with ignition wires as usual. Make sure to power second ignition wire: white or pink/white 4. Locate Bulb Check wire, black wire in top ignition switch plug (figure 1) ‘The wire will test positive when key cylinder is tumed to the on position and test ground when the key cylinder is rotated to the crank position. 5. Locate three wire ribbon cable from Passlock key cylinder (figure 1). 6. Cut yellow(black) wire in position three of the ribbon cable (figure 2) 7, Tum the ignition on. 8. Use a DMM to read the R-code across key side of yellow(black) wire and black(black) wire (figure 2) 9, Interface with bulb check and ribbon cable using method as shown in figure 3. The Interface ‘The interface is made using two relays and the proper value resistor. Figure 3 shows how to connect and wire the relay to any DEI* remote start system, Troubleshooting If the vehicle starts and then stalls out immediately 1. Tum the key to the run position. 2. is the “THEFT SYSTEM” light flashing or on solid? If on solid goto step 3 If flashing go to step 4 3. Make sure engine will start using the key. Fit does, verify that: ‘A The bulb check wire is going to ground when the remote start system is cranking the starter. B. The resistor is not present during crank but is present IMMEDIATELY after crank. C. The second ignition is powered. Fit does not, verify that: ‘A. The “THEFT SYSTEM!” light stops flashing and comes on solid (about 10 minutes). B. Oncor more of the ribbon cable wires are not disconnected 4, Tum key to the run position until the “theft system” light stops flashing and comes on solid (about 10 minutes) Re-test the Rcode to make sure you have properly measured it. Double check the resistor you are using. It must be within 10% of the measured value. Correct if necessary. ‘5. Try to start the motor using the remote start system.
