Hollister-Whitney rope gripper

Maintenance Guideline

1 Introduction

This instruction describes preventive maintenance standards and actions for Hollister-Whitney rope
gripper, models 618, 620, 622, 624, 625 and 626.
The Hollister-Whitney rope gripper is designed to grip the suspension ropes in order to stop the
elevator. The rope gripper prevents overspeeding of ascending car and, if used with BODE overspeed
governor, also unintended movement of the car with doors open.
The rope gripper uses springs along a stationary cam to apply adequate pressure to the suspension
ropes. The cam action is designed to compensate for lining wear and lengthening springs, providing a
constant force on the ropes, even with the springs extended to less than half their original compressed
value.
The rope gripper activates when power is cut to the trigger solenoid which keeps the springs
compressed.
