Geologically, Padang City is located above the subduction zone of 2 large tectonic plates
of the Indo-Australian Plate in the South and the Eurasian Plate in the North which is marked by
the presence of tectonic earthquake centers in the Mentawai Islands District and surrounding
areas. This causes Padang City prone with high intensity of tectonic earthquakes that is
potentially generating tsunami waves. The movement between plates in the subduction zone is a
source of earthquakes in the sea, the subduction zone extends to the Sunda Strait and continues
to the south of Java Island. Earthquakes that occur with great strength, shallow depths, and by
fault mechanism potentially generate a tsunami. The great earthquakes that ever occurred on
Sumatra island occurred in 1797 and 1833. Due to the collision of these two large plates
furthermore, trigger other tectonic symptoms of the magmatic arc characterized by the
emergence of a series of Bukit Barisan mountain ranges and its volcanoes and a large of Sumatra
fault that extends in the direction of the second collision zone of the North-South plate.
