1

PREFACE

The demographic data is backbone of the economy of any

Country or the State. Gujarat State came into existence on 1st May,
1960 and the first population census was undertaken in 1961. The
demographic data are published in various publications, which are
widely used.

Some results of census 2011, have been released based on

which an attempt has been made to publish basic data in the form of
booklet “Salient Features of Census 2011 (All India & Gujarat)”.
This booklet contains basic data of demographic characteristics of
Gujarat State as well as the comparative data of demographic
characteristics for All India for 1961 to 2011.

I hope this publication will be very useful to planners, policy

makers, academicians, administrators, and research workers etc.
who are interested in the socio-economic development of the State.

Suggestions for improvement of this booklet will be

appreciated.
