NON-FICTION RESPONSE ANALYSIS
1. The main idea of the text is that there are these robotic babies that are given to
kids at school and they are given to help prevent teen pregnancy. Kids can see
how hard it would be if they were to get pregnant and raise a child. If they
experience it beforehand, they can see how difficult it would be and that way they
can think before they do.
2. The connections that I can make between this text and other texts I’ve read are
that many people are writing articles trying to inform people that there are ways
of preventing teenage pregnancy and the consequences that come when a teen
gets pregnant.
3. The author’s purpose is to let people know how in some schools they’re trying to
make teenage pregnancy prevention a lesson.
a. “The students are graded on how quickly they respond” and “A baby left
unattended for too long will shut down, affecting the student’s grade” are some
phrases that led me to my conclusion.
4. The audience is anyone who comes across the article; it’s not directed to
anyone specifically.
a. I know this because the article was made to just inform a person of what’s going
on around the world.
b. The choice of audience affects the text because if it’s directed towards a specific
type of group of people then it will only really matter and apply to them.
5. The most relevant details the author uses to argue their position is that in
Colombia one in five mothers is between 15 and 19 years old and since this program
was created it has reduced the teen pregnancy rate by 40 percent.
6. The most prevalent in the writing is logos.
a. 1. “In a study of more than 1,400 student participants in one region of Colombia,
the program reduced the teen pregnancy rate by 40 percent” (Brindley 1).
2. “One study found that the program reduced the teen pregnancy rate by 40
percent among participants” (Brindley 1).
3. “Latin America has the third highest teenage pregnancy rate in the world”
(Brindley 1).
b. The author exercises their credibility by including statistics and studies that have
been made.
7. A possible theme for the text can be that having a program that educates and
shows how teen pregnancy can affect you is important to have because it is effective.
a. 1. “The program reduced the teen pregnancy rate by 40 percent” (Brindley 1).
2. “...are enrolled in—with their parents’ consent—aims to prevent early
pregnancies” (Brindley 1).
3. “Sex education and the baby simulation are both important; they reinforce
each other” (Brindley 1).
8. This text helped me understand the topic by explaining the purpose of the program
and informing me how it impacted the number of teen pregnancies.
9. An element of the text that i might change would be that some things are repeated
information.
a. This change might affect the article by making it shorter but I don’t think it would
affect the meaning of the text necessarily.
10. I think the program “Baby? Think It Over!” should be offered in every high school
in the U.S. The program should be offered in every high school because it could really
educate some students and show them how life would be if they were to get pregnant
themselves. In the text it states that, “One study found that the program reduced the
teen pregnancy rate by 40 percent among participants”. This shows that the program
was really effective on educating kids and showing them how it would be if they got
pregnant at a young age. The program should be provided so that kids could be
educated on teen pregnancy while at the same time, experiencing it for themselves.
