Performance Notes
1) Sticking indications are written from left to right as follows:
ray
2) Caritas is written without meter indications in the hope that it will give the work a seamless
visual concept. The relationships of all rhythms remain the same throughout sections where
tempo markings are indicated, for example: the sixteenth notes beamed in groups of five in the
third movement are played in the same tempo as the other sixteenth notes in the movement, not
as a quintuplet. The emphasis, however, should be placed every five notes giving the passage
asymmetrical metric feel.
3) The sections marked “freely” should be played in an improvised style.
4) Roll Indications:

Traditional hand Independent or Double lateral roll
to hand roll one hand roll
5) Mallet Suggestions:
Movement
Amedium hard mallet tightly wrapped creating contact sound in order to bring out the 32nd
notes in soft passages. This mallet should not get an abrasive sound but rather draw maximum
fundamental from the bar.
Movement If
Three very soft choral mallets with a slightly harder mallet in the soprano voice.
Three medium hard to hard mallets and a slightly softer mallet in the bass voice (this mallet
could be one of the mallets used in Movement J).
