Newton-Raphson Example

Learning Outcomes
Example
Use Newton’s Method to find the only real root of the equation x3 − x − 1 = 0 correct
to 9 decimal places.
We have f (x) = x3 − x − 1 and f 0 (x) = 3x2 − 1. Since f (1) = −1 and f (2) = 5, the
function has a root in the interval [1, 2] since the function changes sign between [1, 2].
Let us make an initial guess x0 = 1.5.
Exercise
Find the root of the function y = x3 + 4x2 + 7 in the vicinity of x = −4 correct to 5
decimal places.
