I. Introduction
Working Thesis
The rushed plot line and chaotic atmosphere within Ted Chiang’s shorty story, Understand,
illustrates the human flaw of lust for infinite knowledge as one’s ultimate downfall from
reaching full contentedness, advocating to readers alike that living in an environment that
controls our fate means not every detail cannot be comprehended. (naturalistic world)
“I want to find them, and comprehend them. I want this more than anything I’ve ever wanted
before” (Chiang 39).
“Fiat logos. I know my mind in terms of a language more expressive than any I’d previously
imagined. Like God creating order from chaos” (Chiang 53).
“I am overwhelmed by all this input, paralyzed with awareness of my self” (Chiang 54).
“I’m cramped inside a bamboo cage that doesn’t let me sit down or stand up. If I try to
relax…then agony, madness” (Chiang 58).
“I comprehend the Word, and the means by which it operates, and so I dissolve” (Chiang 70).
(Goodread).
