KY OTO
During our analysis of Kyoto, we have focuses on the links
and boundaries created by the different types of water in
the city. Our site is the central Biwa lake canal basin. What
struck us is the lack of connections between the water
and its surroundings: the people can’t walk around the
bassin, the buildings ignore their geographical context, the
program with the island’s privileged position is private and
not optimised.
As a matter of facts, our project’s aim is to enhance the
qualities of the basin.
First, we create a dynamic public space : the 6-metre-
wide walk welcomes programs, paths and resting areas.
This outdoor space is continued inside the transparent
building, at the ground floor level. A café, an exhibition
room and a nautical centre are part of the inhabitant’s
experience. In that same building, a nursery that is totally
connected to the water replaces the old one.
The second building, on the edge of the island, is a library.
This program is complimentary with the educational ame-
nities present around the site. It stands like a peaceful
transaction between land (the public garden behind it) and
water. The water treatment offices that used to occupy the
island have been moved to the restored sport complex :
the radical structure and wide openings have lead us to
keep that obsolete building.
Finally, accommodation is created above the public floor
on the bay. The flats follow the 3 metre grid and work as
imbricated splitlevel units. Lights wel help illuminate the 12
metre-wide building and create individual gardens. A large
roof terrace is also accessible from each flat.

amsterdam nord

the why factory
The Why Factory (T?F) is a global think-tank and research
institute, run by MVRDV and Delft University of Technology and
led by professor Winy Maas. It explores possibilities for the
development of our cities by focusing on the production of
models and visualisations for cities of the future.
D E S E R T DEVELOPMENT
a research lab and platform that aims to analyse, theorise and
construct future cities. The Why Factory investigates within the
given world and produces future scenarios beyond it; from uni-
versal to specific and global to local. It proposes, constructs
and envisions hypothetical societies and cities; from science to
fiction and vice versa. The Why Factory thus acts as a future

A sand-driven solution for desertification
The sand in our world is the object of a massive contradiction.
Indeed, on the one hand, an object of desire, dredged, ex-
ploited, plundered to meet the increased needs in the construc-
tion industry, textiles or electronics, the sand will eventually run
out and leave behind lunar landscapes and trimmed territories.
The race for the grain of sand is carried by the mafia for years.
And on the other hand, a massive ecologic problem due to the
abundance of sand, desertification.

sand developmenT
This pavillon responds to the desertification promblem.
How can we deal with the desert usign local material,
sand.
The idea is to shape the desert by solidified sand into
habitable strucutre thanks to a processus of solidification
with bacterias.
To reverse desertification, we actually need to use this
sand. Finding a way to use it to live seems to be the
most logocal solution. In this pavillon, there is tree way
of using this materail, turning it to stone, turning it to glass
(glass structure , roof and floor), and turning it to energy.
The objective is to know where goes this sand and what
could be the perfect design, with the sand condensed in
a 7x7 m cube.

SAND
Sand is solidified into a habitable structure that protects from sand; a per-
macultural anti-desertification network made from the desert itself.
A particular microorganism, Bacillus Pasteurii, is flushed through the du-
nescape (an analogy could be made to an oversized 3d printer), which
causes a biological reaction that turns the sand into solid sandstone.
This part of the project relies upon research carried out by profes-
sor Jason De Jong’ s team at the Soil Interactions Laboratory, UC Davis

logement collectif

Lorsqu’on
