ACCELERATION WORD PROBLEM
It’s a sunny summer day. Gerard and Emily are friends, and they decided to go to the
beach. Once Gerard and Emily are at the beach, they decided to have a sandcastle building
competition. They decide they both have 1 hour to build their sandcastle 5. Just as Gerad is
about to put the flag on his castle, Emily picks up a sand ball and looks at it3. Then throws the
sand ball at his castle. The sand ball traveled 2 m/s in just 3 seconds in the air2. Gerard is angry
at Emily for thwarting his victory, Gerard throws Emily’s castle into the water 4 m/s. Emily starts
to panic since there isn’t enough time to restart. She starts running toward the water 8 m/s4 but
she started to get tired so she slows down1 2 m/s4 to catch her breathe. While seeing Emily run
to the water, Gerard was celebrating his victory. She gets there in 30 seconds and starts digging
through the wet sand, unfortunately she didn’t get there in time.

3. Questions for the reader

- What is another term for negative acceleration and provide an example from the article.
- Which(object)in the article provided has a greater rate of acceleration as compared to
the other(object)? Provide evidence to support your answer.
- What term and/or phrase did the writer use in the article to imply that (an object) is at
rest, as in it’s not moving?

6. Answer Key for questions for the reader

1. What is another term for negative acceleration and provide an example from the article.
Another term for negative acceleration is deceleration, one example that was provided in
the article is when Emily is running towards the water and she “slows down” to catch her
breathe.
2. Does the speed that Gerard throws the sand castle or Emily running in the article provided
has a greater rate of acceleration as compared to the other? Provide evidence to support your
answer.
Emily has a greater rate of acceleration than the sandball. Although Emily is decelerating,
she is decelerating at a greater rate than the sandball. Emily decelerates 5 m/s2 which is
greater than the sandball acceleration which is ⅔ m/s2.
Emily:
8m/s-2m/s/30s=
6m/s/30s=
5 m/s2
Sandball:
2m/s-0m/s/3s=
2m/s/3s=
⅔ m/s2
Gerard throwing Castle:
4m/s2
3. What term and/or phrase did the writer use in the article to imply that (an object) is at rest, as
in it’s not moving?
A term and/or phrase the writer used in the article to imply at rest is “picks up and looks
at it”.
4. What (two) pieces of information did the writer include in the article that are irrelevant and/or
misleading to the reader, as in they are not useful in calculating either speed or acceleration?
Two pieces of information that the writer included that were useless to solve for
acceleration, are that Gerard and Emily have one hour to build their sandcastle, and that
Gerard threw Emily’s sandcastle into the water 4 m/s.
