The Human Vacuum

Deyan, Elizabeth, David, and Sam

Team: Hee, Hee, Hee
Objective

To use human lung power and Newton’s Three laws of

Motion to create a vacuum that efficiently transfers
paper from one reference point to another in 60
seconds or less.
Materials

● 9” by 12” sheet of super heavyweight construction

paper
● 4 sets of two straws- One small, one large
● Scissors
● Ruler
● Red plastic cup
● Standard Lab Table
● Timer
● Sharpie
● Whiteboard
● Expo Marker
● Laptop
Brainstorming/Plan of Action

1. We reviewed our materials and discussed possible plans of action.

2. We tested different ways to fold the paper and finally decided we would divide
it into 8 pieces.
3. We decided that we would use the larger straws since they were easier to use.
4. We cut up the smaller straws as a trial to the determine the optimal straw
length and then modified we would be using during the challenge.
5. Since the slips of paper would not fit easily into the cup we tested different
ways to fold them so it would be easier to slip them in.
6. Folded pieces of paper, however, did not fit easily in the cup, so we decided to
cut each piece of paper in half.
Testing/Modifications

Modifications
-We cut the paper into 16 parts to make each piece
lighter and easier to fit into the cup
-We cut the large straw right below the bend to
make it easier to create a vacuum
