Exercise 2 relies on Thursday’s lecture.

Exercise 1. (.5+1.5 points) For a positive real number c and a complex number
z, we define cz as ez log(c) .
1. Show that |cz | = eRe(z) log(c) for all z in C.

2. Show that the series n≥1 n−z converges (locally) normally on the half-
P
plane {z ∈ C s.t. Re(z) > 1}.
The sum hence defines a continuous function ζ(z) on this half-plane, called
Riemann zeta function.

Exercise 2. (3 points) Find the radii of convergence of the following power series:
i πn/3
f1 (z) = n≥0 n!z n ; f2 (z) = n≥0 e n! z n ; f3 (z) = n≥0 2−n z n ;
P P P
2
f4 (z) = n≥0 q n z n ; f5 (z) = n≥0 z n ; f6 (z) = n≥0 n12 z n .
P P P

(For f4 , q is a positive real number; the answer might depend on q.) Do f5 (z)
and f6 (z) converge when |z| is equal to their radius of convergence?

Exercise 3. (3 points) Consider the open set U = {z ∈ C s.t. Re(z) > 1}. For
n ≥ 0, consider the function fn : U → C defined by fn (z) = (−1)n /(z + n).
P
1. For k ≥ 0, set gk = f2k + f2k+1 . Show that k≥0 gk converges (locally)
normally on U .
P
2. Deduce from 1 that n≥0 fn converges locally uniformly on U .
P
3. Show that, however, n≥0 fn does not converge (locally) normally on U .
