MIMI’S CORNER comment, and learn from these fine
Dear University Club Members,
February is a magical month; it pro-
vides the favorite holiday of young
lovers, a plentiful relief to citizens
across income brackets, and the
beautiful spectacle each week of eve-
ry season back-to-back as our lovely
city melts and freezes ad nauseam in
its noble ascent to thaw into spring.
February was equally as delectable
here at the University Club. I had the
enchanting experience of celebrating
Valentine’s Day doing what I love:
hosting an amorous dinner for our
charming members and their loved
ones. I have worked the dinner shift
many-a-Valentine’s Day, but to do
so in the low, ambient light of a ban-
quet hall inside of a historical land-
mark, as my guests dined, and ro-
manced, and eyes twinkled, and
cheeks blushed, was an unequivocal-
ly marvelous display.
Something that I believe to be abso-
lutely worth a visit to this club is the
rich literary culture we arrange
here. We have a host of phenomenal
authors of all different genres; soci-
opolitical biography, like Roger D.
Noyes’ Life of a Global Nursing
Leader, thriller novels like Jacopo
Della Quercia’s License to Quill,
local historical memoir like Akum
Norder’s The History of Here for
which we have a book launch and
signing this month here at the
UClub, as well as many others we
anticipate in the future. We truly val-
ue great literature, and pay tribute
by featuring our treasured local au-
thors, which is a great treat for our
attendees, as they get to discuss,

setting where the encounter can real-
ly be savored.
I believe I’ve made it clear how
deeply I admire the University Club,
and I love how warmly I have been
welcomed by both members and staff.
As I continue with my fortuitous task
of arranging riveting events and or-
chestrating daily proceedings around
here, I encourage you all to come in
and see what’s new. Enjoy a deli-
cious dinner, or join me for a cock-
tail at happy hour, and delight in the
antiquity and uniqueness of the Uni-
versity Club.

Launch with Author Akum Norder
When is a house a time machine?
When writer Akum Norder takes you
from the settlement of Albany's Pine
Hills neighborhood, through the con-
struction of her house, and explores
the lives and times of the families
that lived there before hers.
Writer Akum Norder will discuss
and sign her book, The History of
Here: A House, the Pine Hills Neigh-
borhood, and the City of Albany at
the University Club of Albany from
5:30-7:00 PM.

available for purchase for $20, and
you're invited to stay for dinner - but

Join the fun in the U Club's Grille
Room with vocalist Eileen Egan
Mack. With a background in classi-
cal music and Broadway, she'll ex-
plore the Great American songbook
with accompanist Scott Bassinson.
The performance will run from 7:00-
9:00 PM, and is free and open to the
public as part of the Club's celebra-
tion of First Friday, but table seating
is limited. Please RSVP.
Vocalist Eileen Egan Mack
has been performing with music en-
sembles including jazz groups and
her own bands. With a background
in classical music and Broadway, she
enjoys exploring the Great American
songbook while working with jazz
guitarists, pianists, and bassists.
She is known for her lyrical and
emotive interpretation of music and
the words that give the notes mean-
ing, the words that tell the stories.

Let the sun-drenched work of Megan
Ruch warm you as we open a three-
month solo exhibition of her work
with a reception on First Friday,
March 2 from 6:00 PM until 8:00 PM
at the University Club. Ms. Ruch has
been named the Club's twelfth Artist
in Residence.
This exhibition continues the partner-
ship between the University Club of
Albany and the Albany Barn, Inc.
(www.albanybarn.org), which is ded-
icated to providing a sustainable cre-
ative arts incubator and community
arts center in Arbor Hill - a place for
artists to live, work and inspire.
It is plain to see that this First Friday
is packed with exciting social and
cultural events, culminating in what
we know will be an invigorating, fun
-filled night of art, music, and litera-

The Federalist Papers: Lec-
tures two, three, and four

The University Club of Albany
Foundation, with the support of
Humanities New York, is pleased
to present the second in a series of
talks on The Federalist Papers by
author and historian Giacomo Ca-
labria on Thursday, March 1. The
talks will take place at the Univer-
sity Club from 6:00-7:30 PM on
alternating Thursdays.
This series invites participants to
examine, discuss, and revel in the
creation of the United States
through some of its most im-
portant documents: The Federalist
Papers. We will focus on ten spe-
cific essays authored by Alexander
Hamilton, James Madison, and
John Jay. We will provide back-
ground history, delight over mis-
adventures and anecdotes, and ul-
timately use these documents to
better appreciate and understand
the nation we live in today. The
program is designed to be interac-
tive and engage individuals of all
backgrounds.
The cost is $12 per session.
