Reflection Paper

One of the topics during the seminar by Ms. Mary is about the myxobacteria. Myxobacteria commonly live in

the soil and use insoluble organic compounds as the source of food. In order to differentiate the different kinds of

myxobacterias, its fruiting bodies is one way of determining and as well as its color. When it comes to the fungi’s

morphology, it has different types: boletes & polypores which looks like mushrooms having pores underneath the

cap; stinkhorns, puffballs and birds nest fungi are smelly, powdery and cup like with eggs respectively; cup fungi are

shaped like a saucer or shallows cups; coral and jelly fungi are like jelly in texture; skin fungi is like a skin which grew

on surfaces of woods and lastly flask producing fruiting bodies in its small chambers. In comparing the morphology of

different myxobacteria’s, it is not that hard to compare but the hard thing is capturing the patterns under the

microscope. Hyphae are often white colored and grows in long fibers and the vegetative structure of fungi is known

to be the mycelium.

The other topic is discussed by Sir. Ruiz which is about bacteria. In his study he used soil sample collection;

enrichment, isolation and purification; screening of pesticide-tolerant bacteria; characterization and identification of

pesticide tolerant bacteria; and biodegradation assay was done. He also shared different experiences during his

undergrad days, and as he tells his story he did really funded his study on his own effort in order to finish his thesis.

Wherein he also had a hard time culturing different bacteria and there was a time he taught that some of his cultured

bacteria might die and if that happens his grades will also die, but fortunately sir ruiz succeeded in culturing his

subjected bacteria’s.
