Gear Reductions

All of the gear designs conceived fit into one of the following categories: spur,
helical, planetary,
bevel, or combinations of the previous categories. The designs ranged from single
stage gear
reductions up to four stage reductions. Below are descriptions of five main gear
reduction
concepts along with their main advantages and disadvantages. A number of the
concepts were

eliminated without use of a scoring matrix, because they were either very similar
to other
concepts generated, or had obvious flaws; there were also some concepts that were
combined to
produce other concepts. All of the concepts selected for the design matrix had the
correct output
shaft rotational direction.
