OBJECTIVES MATERIALS IMPLEMENTATION WHAT'S IN THE PICTURE? To enable students to see how easy it is to make assumptions when only seeing part of the whole, To help students understand that their perspectives about other people and the world may be only partial pictures, limited by their life experiences. To encourage students to look for the “whole picture” when examining issues of equality and inequality. Copies of pictures 1-A and 1-B, 2-A and 2-B, p. 99, for all students, Examine the pictures yourself before you begin the lesson. Pictures I-A and 2-A each rep- resent the central portion of a larger scene. Picture 1-A portrays a woman pouring from a measuring cup. The larger scene, 1-B, shows her as a chemist in a laboratory. Picture 2-A shows a black woman holding back a white girl. Picture 2-B places them at a busy street comer, where the woman is trying to keep the girl from being hit by a car. Divide students into heterogeneous groups. Be sure they’re mixed by race and gen- der, if possible. Give each student a copy of pictures 1-A and 2-A. Have students look at
