 Motor speed is converted to a digital pulse train

 A reference pulse train and the feedback speed pulse train are compared.
 The phase error is derived, filtered and set as input to a voltage control oscillator
 The voltage controlled oscillator generates a pulse train to minimize this phase error.
 The resulting frequency signal is synchronized with the reference pulse train.
 A multiple of the reference frequency can be generated by inserting a divider in the
feedback path using a Divide by N counter.
