ASSIGNMENT-2

SUMMARY:
• Abrasive water jet machining is a non-convectional machining process. AWJ cutting technology
has a number of distinct advantages like no thermal distortion, high flexibility, high machining
versatility, and good surface quality, easy integration with mechanical manipulators, minimal
burrs, and low machining force. Its application into hard-to-cut materials is growing.
• The most common model for cutting ductile materials is proposed by Hashish (1989).this model
based on erosion model that accounts for the physical and geometrical characteristics of the
eroding particle. he has also developed a particle erosion model to predict smooth cutting region
(cutting wear region) and rough cutting region (deformation wear zone) depth in 1995.
• Momber and Kovacevic (1994) has developed a Simple fracture mechanical model and model
of comminution to define secondary fragmentation in water jet cutting of brittle multiphase
materials.
• Yong and Kovacevic (1997) suggested that ,if the models are based on water-mixture film
erosion, instead of dry erosion.
• Mabrouki et al.(1999) proposed a numerical study in order to explore the effect of pure water
jet erosion by continuous impacts on non-coated and coated metal sheets. They developed a
finite element model to investigate and analyze in detail the material behavior under water jet
impingement. Mabrouki and Raissi using Dyna3D code in order to model the jet/target
interaction. They assume that the water jet is coherent and characterized by a uniform velocity
that is proportional to that of the nozzle exit.
• In the current study,The flow has been divided into three regions: inside the water jet nozzle, the
water jet flow into the air, and the water jet impact on a non-moving target material.
• A

• combination of Eulerian–Langrangian elements is used

• for the waterjet and the target material, respectively in order to handle their interaction. The
failure of elements in the target material is handled by introducing a threshold strain after which
Langrangian elements can be removed.
