Traditional and vernacular building methods are discussed along with environmentally friendly and cost-effective technologies. Calculations are provided to determine the energy in two different types of roofs per square meter: a filler slab roof using hollow concrete blocks and a Mangalore tiled roof spanning a room. The energy embedded in materials and construction is quantified for each roof over a square meter area.

ASSIGNMENT – 2
1. Write a note on traditional methods of building construction?
2. Give a brief description about Vernacular Architecture? 3. Briefly discuss about environment friendly & cost effective building technologies? 4. Calculate the energy in a filler slab roof (One way - 3.0m) per sq.m, assuming that 7.5 SMBs of size 230 x 190 x 75 were used to replace tension concrete in 1 sq.m of roof. There is no change in the amount of steel used. 5. A Mangalore tiled roof is used to span a room of size 3.0m x 6.0m. The roof slope is 200 and assuming wall thickness of 23 cm and roof overhang of 30 cm at both ends of the slope. Calculate the energy in the roof per sq.m. Assume energy in one Mangalore tile is equal to 15.0 MJ
