VOCABULARY

sue = to take legal action in an attempt to obtain financial compensation.


take legal action = a person / company willing to start general legal procedures over a matter.
try = to examine in a court of law.
bring to trial = to take a criminal case to a court of law to be examined.
take sb to court = similar to 'take legal action' but a more specific and direct threat.
prosecute = to bring a criminal charge against sb and subject that person to legal proceedings.
charge with = to accuse of a criminal act, esp. by the police.
continual = repeated many times; happening often.
continuous = continuing without interruption.
perpetual = continuing without interruption for an indefinite period.
eternal = forever.
constant = repeated many times usually in a regular manner.
incessant = without interruption, used negatively to express irritation.
steady = continuing in a regular manner.
ongoing = sth which began in the past and seems unlikely to stop in the near future.
critical = of decisive importance.
crucial = very important, usually in determining sth or resolving a problem.
essential = very necessary
vital = extremely necessary
significant = of importance and meaning
grave = important, pressing and usually worrying
fundamental = basic
forbid = to order not to do sth.
prohibit = used in official or legal instances
ban = to make unlawful, to order not to be done
censor = to remove or prevent from being seen either because offensive or politically sensitive
famous = well-known to the general public
renowned = well-known for a particular reason
celebrated = well-known for intellectual or aesthetic reasons
distinguished = well-known to a limited group for great achievement in an academic discipline or in
public life
eminent = used as 'distinguished' but especially to indicate respect
notorious = well-known for sth bad
revere = to feel deep respect, to regard a s sacred
restrain = to control / hold back sth/sb by force
curb = to control sth that is undesirable
check = to hold back or stop sth especially by slowing down a process or action
inhibit = to hold back usually by psychological or social constraints
