In the early 1900s, people all over the world were reading about Sherlock Holmes, the great

British detective. The stories were

written in English by Arthur Conan Doyle, and then they were sent to other countries for translation. In Russia, Sherlock Holmes
was very popular, but readers often couldn’t get the latest adventures. So, some Russian authors were asked to write Sherlock
Holmes stories. The first one appeared in 1907. Since then, many more Russians have enjoyed reading about this extraordinary
character.
The Russian stories were written by P. Orlovetz and P. Nikitin, but nothing is known about these two authors. Thanks to historian
George Piliev and translator Alex Auswaks, this remarkable collection of seven Sherlock Holmes stories is now in English for the
first time.
George Piliev has written a useful 21 page introduction. He explains about the Russian love of mystery and crime fiction. He also
tells us about the history of the fictional character from the first time a Sherlock Holmes story came to Russia in 1893.
In the first story, Holmes and Dr. Watson, his friend, are on holiday in Russia. In later stories, they travel all over the country and
the authors describe the difficult conditions in Russia at that time. But is the hero in Russia as elegant as Holmes from Baker
Street? For the delighted Russian readers, he is more like a detective from Vladivostok.
In my opinion this is a fun, quick read. If you are a fan of Sherlock Holmes, you won’t be disappointed.

On 27th December 2013, Maria Leijerstam from Wales
became the first person in the world to cycle to the South Pole.
The snow, wind and freezing cold made it slow and difficult,
but she completed her journey across Antarctica in 10 days, 14
hours and 56 minutes. Leijerstam has won a place in the
Guinness World Records for this extraordinary journey.
Thirty-five-year-old Leijerstam planned the trip for two years
and she called her adventure The White Ice Cycle Expedition.
She predicted she needed 20 days to complete the 638-
kilometre journey. During 2013, she was busy training,
designing and testing equipment in Siberia, Norway and
Iceland.
Leijerstam arrived at the starting point on the Ross Ice Shelf
on 17th December. Her three-wheeled PolarCycle carried 45
kilograms of food and equipment and a pair of skis. She could
use the skis instead of the front wheels when there was a lot of
snow. The PolarCycle was designed and built for her by a
company in Cornwall, England.
Using a GPS, Leijerstam cycled across the mountains on the
Leverett Glacier. In some places there were winds of 160
kilometres an hour and the temperature went down to -29°
Celsius. She cycled for 10-16 hours a day and didn’t have a
day of rest. On the fifth day, her knee began to hurt, but that
didn’t stop her.
Maria Leijerstam has done other remarkable things and she’ll
continue to make history. Right now, she’s planning her next
expedition.
